A SUPPORT GROUP FOR PARENTS EXPERIENCING A VARIETY OF EMOTIONS AFTER BIRTH
This weekly support group is for parents who are experiencing a variety of new emotions after birth.
The arrival of a new baby is a happy and joyful occasion. But it’s also a time of change and adjustment, and many women find themselves feeling overwhelmed by their new responsibilities. Everyone expects you to be the glowing new mother who experiences joy at each giggle; but what if that joy doesn’t come so easily? What if you feel scared and overwhelmed by all these new responsibilities? What if instead of feeling adoration toward your baby, you feel resentful and inadequate? Does this make you a horrible mother? Absolutely not; what you may be experiencing is postpartum depression (PPD).
Postpartum depression is a form of depression that a mother can experience within the first few weeks, months or even up to a year after having a baby. It’s normal for many new mothers to feel a bit down after childbirth, but if these “baby blues” last more than two weeks and affect your ability to take care of yourself and your baby, you may have postpartum depression. It isn’t only first-time mothers who experience this depression; it can also affect mothers who have already had children as well as adoptive mothers.
What Am I Feeling?
Maybe you have felt or thought the following:
I’m so irritable
I cry all the time or I can’t cry
I can’t get going or I can’t slow down
I’m so worried or I’m so anxious
I feel numb or I can’t feel anything
I just can’t cope
I feel so alone
I feel so guilty or I feel ashamed
I don’t know who I am anymore
I want to sleep all the time or I can’t sleep
I can’t stop eating or I don’t want to eat
I’m having very scary thoughts
If so, you may be experiencing Postpartum Depression and you are not alone – help is available. Come and meet other moms who are having similar experiences, learn about Postpartum Depression and what you can do to help yourself and your family. This group is for women who are at-risk for, or who are currently suffering from, postpartum anxiety and/or depression. Program is available for Mothers of children ages 0-12 months.
